Hot Toddy

Hot Toddy

2012 is here already and after surviving some holiday overindulgences, and now facing some chilly January temperatures, we decided to soothe and steel ourselves with some Hot Toddies.

Even just the idea of settling into a cold winter evening, while holding a hot, spiced (and spiked) drink is comforting.  We spent some time looking up the history so we could try some “classic” recipes, but soon into our research it became clear that there’s a lot of room for creativity with ingredients.  Lucky for us since we wanted to make this Hot Toddy not only delicious, but also photogenic.  You just gotta love the look of a clove-studded lemon slice suspended in a drink, like a floating piece of exotic and aromatic artwork.

Also known as a “Hot Whiskey” or “Whiskey Punch,” a Hot Toddy is also reportedly a great cure for a cold.  Fortunately we haven’t had to test that aspect of the drink yet – perhaps it actually is preventative too.  A very cozy recipe is below.

Hot Toddy Recipe

Ingredients
6 whole cloves
1 shot of Irish Whiskey
1 slice of lemon, cut in half
2 tsp of raw sugar
1 Star Anise pod
1 Cinnamon Stick
Boiling water

Stud the lemon slice with cloves, and place into a heat proof glass or mug  along with the cinnamon stick and star anise pod.  Top off with boiling water, and stir in sugar until dissolved.  Sip slowly until all stress and tension is dissolved.
